Utilitarian Decision is the Best Decision.

First of all i would like to thank everyone that agreed on dropping the lowest grade and curving the last test grade, your vote didnt only help you , but also helped  all your classmates. Now as far as what happened in the class. First of all, I did not like the fact that some people nominated themselves as leaders and just got up front of the class,  we were able to finish the exercise but people that were put in charge were completely un qualified , no offense. Second of all I do believe that if everyone that benefits from the decision being made, people that disagree should just go along with it. I made me really upset when only one, i repeat only one person did not agree with the decision the entire class agreed upon. I think it was a very selfish act. It is good to have a mind of your own, but if you are pressured with time, you just ned to go along with everyone else's opinion, especially if you are the only one that disagrees and have no real reason for not agreeing. however i do have respect for to guys in the back row for not agreeing with our decision however they still voted in favor for it. you guys had your reason, and it in fact made since and i would like to thank you for still giving us your vote.  I think i didnt handle the situation to the best ability, just because that one vote short got me really heated, i understand as a manager you need to be able to keep you feeling to yourself, and hold yourself together, i failed

Honestly, I voted because of you. I like you but is afraid of you at the same time. I do not want you to get angry. You are right, I am wrong, happy? I do not want you to be angry, I want you to be happy. You are not as lovely when you are angry.

There is no rule that says I have to give my opinion to who or anyone. It is a democracy, I can give my opinion to whoever I like, or only to those who I think will listens, or to everyone, or to no one at all. I can vote, but I do not have to. It is my right. You are from Russia, and I am from China, I know those things. It is not really about the best solution or the vote itself, in fact, there might be a better solution or a better way. It is about classroom politics, about inter-person relationships. Do you want to fight another world war? Keeping peace and take care of things peacefully and diplomatically is often the better solution. At the end of the day, I want to make another friend and not another enemy. I have no concern what the final solution is, and like Churchill, sometimes it is better to make friends with the Devil for a common cause. Of course, there is no Devil in our class, there are only smart and hot people in our class participating hot or heated class activities. It was fun and have to thank our professor for that, won't you agree? Well, I am not going to say who is smart, who is hot, who is both hot and smart, that is personal opinion and I like to reserve that opinion to myself, unless, you get mad again. One thing though, I know you are a lady, so I think you will not behave in unlady-like way, not that mean you have ever been unlady-like. I respect you and I respect you more when you have grace and behave lady-like, but I always respect you nonetheless, whether you respect me or not.

Whatever happen happened, and let's keep that in that class and move on. You are not still mad about that class, me, or the whole subprime crisis/debacle (or whatever you wnt to call it) in August of 2007, or going to write another blog about it are you?

ok, first of all lol stop pointing ppl out womanz, and although i agree with what you are saying you, we were on a time constrain and the people who elected themselves officials just took initiative and it was good how they just got up there becuase they did listen to all ideas thrown at them and helped us coordinate and ultimately com e to at least one conclusion.

Hey, i am with you all the way. my friend. The whole experience got me heated up as well( not counting my real 101 degree fever that day from cold). I took this activity too close to heart maybe when this one person went against everyone without even giving a reasonable explanation and trying to be different. There is time to be different and time to feel as a part of the group that we are. Besides , if you are really that standofish and need attention , then go for it all the way. What this person did is just kept sitting with the head down and ignoring our requests to explain that kind of choice. The utilitarian approach is a bit tricky and asks for a great sense of community and solidarity. Everybody is entitled to the unique opinion as long as it promotes healthy relationships within the group. In our case, however, the decision would not hurt anyone and actuall rather simplify the study process for those who did well on the midterm. I was initially very surprised to see such display of nihilism in our great class.

It was probable difficult for you to admit that you were wrong but it is great that you realized it. If you read my second blog about the management problem you will see that I have a similar issue. I was also raised in a communist country, with the communist teachers, and couple of employers who behaved as communists. Authority was always to be listened to and not questioned, so now when I get the chance to be the authority my first instinct, is to behave same way. I'm trying to change that and I hope you will to. What I realized is that behaving that way managers miss out on lot of good ideas, respect of their team members and gain resentment which leads for the projects to suffer. Also, utilitarian way is not always the best way to go. It leads to suppressing the individualism and creativity. At the end I would like to cite a Horton from Dr. Seuss who says: "Person is a person, no matter how small." :)

It was really difficult situation, and yet it could be one of the best lessons for us. If we have another chance to do it over, will you do things differently? Not just you, I believe most of us were so worried in the last few minutes of class.

I do agree that it was a bit frustrating than there was a couple of people disagreeing and at the end one who seemed to be holding off the decision for the greater good of the class especially since we didn't understand what the reasoning was.

Honestly, at one point I thought that maybe the professor had told these people to disagree just to see how the rest of the class would react. Obviously, this was not the case but the thought helped me find humor in the situation where people were being so serious.
